Eve: companion for life

1960 December 15

Before leaving for London, Lewis had gone on a couple of dates with the young and lovely Eve Spitz. Upon his return from overseas, they recommenced dating, and on 15 December 1960 Lewis married the love of his life.

His wedding speech:

"Dear Dr. Sanger, Mum & Dad, Mummy & Daddy Spitz and friends,

On behalf of my dear wife and myself I would like to thank Dr. Sanger for the kind words which he has spoken. Eve and I only hope to live up to those expectations which he has in us.

In the first instance I would like to thank my newly acquired parents for providing me with their dearly beloved and only daughter. For everything they have done for Eve and I myself I would like to express our grateful appreciation. Firstly we have the magnificent evening tonight which we are all enjoying so much. But more permanent than this evening is the home life that they have provided for Eve until now, and where she has been sheltered under their protective and loving care. This responsibility has now been conferred upon me, since I have today undertaken to take over this role, and I do know just how much I have to live up to, in much the same way have my own parents looked after me until this day and endowed me with their generosity. To them I am indebted for so much that I can but be too brief on the subject. Suffice to say that things were not always easy for them in their early years in Australia. However they managed at all times to provide nothing but the best for their children, even at the expense of their own discomfort. Therefore to Mum & Dad would I tonight also like to express my thanks and appreciation.

In the same generous way as our respective parents have been to us have been all of you here tonight in the magnificent array of wedding presents which we have received. They will no doubt prove to be a great start for us in our new home and they are much appreciated.

Finally we come to the two beautiful bridesmaids whom have done so much to beautify and adorn our wedding. They have both travelled long distances to be here, however distance means so little between true friends and it only goes to show their feelings towards Eve.

Then last but not least I would like to pay a tribute to our pretty flower girl Judith King-Smith who has so ably carried out her task today and whom has been such a delight and adornment to all.

Rabbi Dr. Sanger and friends, I would like you to charge your glasses and join Eve and myself to drink to the health of both the parents, of the bridesmaids, and of the flower girl. "

It is beautiful to see one’s parents continue to hold hands during their entire relationship. Dad almost seemed surprised by his good fortune of forming such a loving relationship with someone so well matched with him. We recall how he secretly hand-crafted a gift for her: a tiny pure gold ornament of a house, an expression of his feelings.

Mum has always been Dad’s confidante and companion: providing a loving and warm home, with tasty meals, and sharing his ideals of family and contributing to the community.

Dad was incredibly proud of Mum when she was selected as an Olympic torch bearer for the 2000 Olympic Games, in recognition of her Vision Australia and other community contributions.

Mum’s severe illness in 2007 and subsequent repercussions would have tested anyone’s patience; however Dad’s love, loyalty, and compassion shone through. Dad took inspiration from her courageous approach to adversity.
